My First GPS - GARMIN nuvi 200

I had been planning to get a GPS unit to hook to my notebook for sometime. I heard of a Bluetooth unit by GARMIN. I went to Low Yat Plaza the other day and tried it out. There was a problem with the Bluetooth communication. My notebook crashed a couple of times. After trying it out for half an hour I finally gave up. Then I asked the sales person for a simple stand alone unit. He introduced me the GARMIN nuvi 200. It looks simple and compact just like a game device. But the price is not a game. It cost around RM1,100. A bit expensive for an entry level unit. It looks good though and solid and so I gave it a shot. Can't go wrong with a GARMIN product.

On the way home I tried it in the train. It works fine even inside a vehicle in the night. Though it still looks like a game device, the tracking is really accurate. I heard GARMIN has the best mapping system. Though it is a good device it still has problem acquiring the satellite around tall buildings and even dark stormy sky as most GPS unit do.

Besides the flat 2D view, it can also display in 3D. Personally I like the 2D view because I have a clearer picture of the things around me. Just like reading a conventional map. Unlike conventional map I can know exactly where I am. If I click on the car icon it will tell me my location in longitude and latitude. In time of emergency it is very useful. If you need to go to a certain location it will direct you there with a voice-prompted directions every step of the way. You can choose the options of the shortest or the fastest route.

The other thing that I like about a GPS unit like this is the Point of Interest tool. It will tell me places nearby like Food, Fuel, Shopping, Bank/ATM, Hospitals and many other POI. No more asking strangers where things are while the place or thing you are looking for is just around the corner.

It also has some handy tools for travellers like Calculator, Currency Converter, Unit Converter and World Clock. It even has a Picture Viewer where you can store photos and show it around. The photos can be transfered by a USB cable. New maps can also be transfered this way.

Here's a demo movie from GARMIN: http://www8.garmin.com/buzz/demos/nuvi200demo.jsp

Have Company Will Travel

This week I have been very busy renovating my new office down in JB. A travel company that I share with my sister. The guy beside me in the photo who is trying hard to be taller is my assistant Shahrul. He had been working very hard and deserves the limelight. We had done most of the painting and today we had stripped the floor for the new carpet.

This is the view from the reception area looking towards the window area which will be my room. The office location is just great that is beside the highway. A nice view to see everytime I come back from Kuala Lumpur. Looks like we have to work through the weekend to get the business running next week.

Rantauan's Eid Gathering at Malacca

Last Saturday the 27th October we had our Rantauan's Eid gathering at the town of Malacca. Usually every year we had separate gatherings in Kuala Lumpur and Singapore to welcome home our members from overseas who are back for Eid. This year I had an idea to have it in Malacca, the historic place where once a popular destination for travellers from all over the world.

We stayed for a night in Hotel Seri Costa (http://www.hotelsericosta.com/home.htm). I got a good deal for the exclusive rooms even had an extra one. There we had a casual eid feast brought by our member Aisah from her home town nearby.

That's me and the rest sitting on 'tikar mengkuang' that was bought by our member eLva at the handicraft shops nearby, giving the touch of kampung life in a hotel. This is one of the most memorable and fun gathering we had. Not sure if I can top this. Just waiting for another crazy idea.

It's a Girl and I'm an Uncle - finally

Yesterday my sister gave birth to a baby girl by a caesarean section. The little wonder is named Noradzwin as-Sofia. This is my first niece and finally I became an uncle. Feeling older and yet blessed. Not much words to describe the feeling or perhaps no words could.

Ramadhan Iftar @KLCC

Ramadhan 1428 Hijri must be the most busiest Ramadhan so far. Dividing my time between JB and KL. In JB I am helping out my almost due sister with her first baby. In KL is the never ending work and the lovely Wardah which make it all worthwhile to be here. We spend iftar together a number of times. Most of it in KLCC. A wonderful place to dine. During this Ramadhan they add a bit of Ramadhan resonance with some middle eastern music at the atrium. Surrounded by an Islamic design and colourful lanterns hanging from the roof.

Merdeka - Freedom and its price

What if you are standing infront of your king, the Prime Minister and the Deputy Prime Minister and the national enthem is playing, and suddenly one of the pigeons that was released a moment ago landed on your songkok. This really happen to one of the UMNO youth member at Merdeka Stadium last night on the 50th Merdeka Celebration. Will this incident help to boost his political career? Or will he be remembered or well known as...... Well figure out you own tag line.
I took these shots from the balcony of Merdeka Stadium. My camera was on the tripod and my finger was on the trigger. Oh well, why not?

2nd Day Rehearsal @Dataran

This morning started with something that I dread - rain. It pours really early in the morning. I arrived just in time to take shelter under one of the tents. I don't mind getting wet but the camera may not. But the rain went a way living the rising sun still sleeping behind the clouds. Fortunately the camera can go manual and I can set my exposure. Most of the video shots this morning were under the grey clouds. But the bright sun finally defeated the clouds and the above shot of me was taken. Behind the cheerie smile lies a back ache and tired muscles. Has to withstand this for two more days. Tomorrow will be the 'Ambang Merdeka', a prelude to the actual event and also a reenactment of the actual 1st Merdeka Day.

50th Merdeka Day Rehearsal

Today is the first day of Merdaka Day rehearsal. Got to be at Dataran Merdeka by 7 am. Dragging the HD cam and all its accessories on my backpack plus the tripod on my shoulder. I finally got my crew tag from Megat of Pak Ngah Production when I arrived at the location. It was 6+ am and it was still dark but the place was crowded with participants, mostly students and military personnels. I really did not know what the agenda for today but I was given a quick brief. Well who cares, I have my crew tag and I can be anywhere. No one is going to stop me except that big army tank.

Penang For The First Time

I had been to so many places in the world after all these years but this is my first time in Penang. It is a working holiday and all paid for, room service and all. Well except the running around expenses to get the best shots. The weather wasn't that friendly nowadays. Everyday looking up at the sky looking for my friend the sun. I had one good shooting day though which was Saturday. Armed with my phone camera and my old DV videocam, I experienced Penang through my lenses. All the still shots here were shot using my phone camera including the panoramic shots which were sticthed together by ArchSoft Panorama Maker.

Wish You Were here

I have been given a project to shoot promo video about travel and holiday in Malaysia. For this 3 months I will be going all over working and experience the places and food, virtually for FREE. Kind of living in a postcard for a while. Last weekend I was at Desaru Damai beach. The place was quite quiet, nice place if you need some peace. Either sitting at the balcony looking at the ocean or just hang around the pool. The food wasn't that great but there are places nearby to choose. There is also a fruit farm nearby, quite unique, complete with monkeys. I was hoping to see the full moon rising at the horizon but missed the date by two days. Instead I went for a boat ride on the river in the evening to watch fireflies. It was like watching Christmas tree by the river. When I came back to the hotel the moon was high up. It is always a beauty to watch the moon.

Big Boy with Small Toy

Few days ago I bought and tested a MIDI keyboard for my composer friend Pak Ngah. He said he needs a small all-in-one keyboard to use with his laptop so that he can continue working while he is traveling. I chose Alesis' PhotonX25 for him which has everything he needs, a MIDI keyboard and also an audio recording unit. With all the VSTi, virtual instrument plugins installed on his laptop, he can have the whole band or orchestra in his back pack. When he is back at his studio he can transfer the files to his desktop and do the final mix.
I feel excited about this because the very instrument I am testing will be the tool that will be used for his future compositions. Though his genre is traditional, major part of his tool is digital. Who knows this instrument that I am testing will be used to compose pieces for famous stars like Siti Nurhaliza and many more ;)

Everyday I Learn

Around 15 years ago I wrote a lyric-poem. I was so much in love and so heart broken. Yet there is beauty in every moment:

Everyday I Learn

I like to write a book
If you like to take a look
The times that turn to moments
The stars so bright the moon just fallen

May be I'll write a play
About a place so far away
So many things that I've spoken
Oh I wish that they were diamonds

Everyday I learn
That this world can turn
All the colours that we see
Are people like you and me

Everyday I learn
That this world can turn
All the diamonds in the sky
Are miracles in my eyes

I like to go away
To a great big out there
Looking for something that I miss
More than a moment bliss

May be I'll stay
If I can find my way
For everything under the sun
You will always be the only one

After traveling the world looking for love and happiness, I finally found what I was looking for. I always thought the answer is somewhere out there, but it is always near. Then I wrote this one:

Everyday We Learn (Present)

I like to read the book
Would you like to take a look
Of past, future and present
Of stars, moon, sun, earth and heaven

al-Quran the name we say
Allah's guidance to lead the way
So many things He has spoken
It all worth more than diamond

Everyday we learn
that this world can turn
All the colours that we see
Allah made it for you and me

Everyday we learn
that this world can turn
All the diamonds in the sky
His miracles in our eyes

He like to show the way
Would you like to walk His way
Look for things that we've missed
More than a moment bliss

Perhaps you'll like to stay
Close to Him in our prayer
For everything under the sun
He will always be the only One

The Beat From The Past

The mid 80s was a wonderful time for electronic music. The New Wave and all that. I was so crazy then even to the extend of building my own gadgets. Electronic musical instruments were so expensive like you have to sell your arms and legs to own one. Then came Roland with a drum machine called Drumatix TR-606 that is quite affordable. The sounds were pure electronic like those rhythm section of the electronic organ. The big difference was it is programmable. You can see that big 'Computer Controlled' on the panel. It just blew my mind to see that. Wow a computer inside this small box. Roland came out with a Bass Line to go with it. I sold that away. Really regretted that.
A couple of weeks back I went back to dad's and clean up this old friend. Now it is considered a 'legend' because many virtual instruments software nowadays copied the concepts for those Techno musicians. I guess I must have been one of the earliest Technos.

Looking At Myself From Space

Just installed Google Map Pro yesterday. Took a trip around the world and finally found myself. Under that yellow pin is where I am at Plaza Sentral. On the top right is KL Sentral, the travel hub. From there I could take an express train to the airport and fly anywhere. Think of installing the software on my laptop and plugin a GPS. That will be cool and no more getting lost.

Where I lay my head ....

After months of hard work writing my biz plan, it finallly paid off. Last Saturday I got my investment-grant of some 'sinful' amount. Much more than I expected. People may expect that I will go out and party till morning. Instead I went and bought a sleeping bag coz I know I'm going to need it for this coming months. No I'm not going out camping outdoors, at my studio obviously. Got to work harder and make all my plans a reality. Shukur alhamdulillah and thanks to my family and friends who after all this years believing in me and been very supportive. Dreams do come true for those who work the righteous path. On this ground I prostrate(sujud) and on this ground I shall lay my head.

Between Masjid and Murtabak

Gone for a short trip to old Singapore last week. After solat at Masjid Sultan, my friend Khalil and I went across the road where the world best murtabak is found. Many have travelled round the world and yet still come back for that special taste. Unfortunately I was full and just settled for a tea tarek while Khalil enjoying his murtabak plate. The place may not last forever. So I captured the moment for us to share.

The Ghost Ship In 'Paradise'

On a dark stormy night, in the middle of an angry ocean. Flashes of lightning behind the dark stormy clouds reveals a ghost ship approaching. Shall I continue with this rendering or shall I wash my stained mug, throw away my trash or have a shower? I think my bladder needs more attention. Don't take it so seriously, it's only an ocean created in Maya and clouds in Vue Extreme with the help of Discreet Combustion. All these for 'Stealing Paradise'.

A Perfect Storm in 'Paradise'

After weeks of experiment, I finally completed the 'Perfect Storm' waves for 'Stealing Paradise'. The challenge is not actually creating the stormy ocean but creating the 'toon shade' on a rendered sequence to blend with the cel characters. The other challenge is to get the proper colour dynamic because the visual is meant for HDTV and film. The mood can't be conveyed on a normal video. I have to turn off the room light to get the feel of this scene. It has also to be viewed on a big wide screen. I have included the full resolution pix if you want to get the idea: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/jaziz52/Works/photo?authkey=VAK17jQqr7U#5059243108144871874

IP Creators Challenge Series Launch

Yesterday I went to KLCC Convention Centre for the launch of MSC Malaysia's IP Creators Challenge Series*. I was there just for the food :) Been working 24/7 and survivng on party nuts and potato chips, a big buffet would be a nice change. Last year I participated under POV and we won. This year I am going in under my own company, JAZ Multmedia. The prize is not much but it's enough to fund the web animation promo for my comic project. The guys at MDEC told me that I can choose any theme I want and there's no real guidline. Now I don't have to crack my brain thinking of a goodie-goodie theme. This time I am Not Trying To Make Nice**.

As I laid her to rest........

My 'wife' passed away last night after months of illness. She wasn't responsive as before. Her touchscreen failed many times. I had to rush her to surgery. I couldn't save her. Bleep and she's gone.
Her name was Palm TX. She's my fourth 'wife' from the family of Palm. It was a decade of romance but it has to end sometime. It was a special moment when we started. Very few people owns a PDA then. We dated at many airports, restaurants, trains and buses and many quite corners. Yeah life was simple then. No colours, no Bluetooth, no InfraRed, no video, no music, no camera, just the serial port and the stylus was just a cheap plastic. But we had many good times.
In this modern times we had too many things but too little time together. I think my PDA years is over. Until something really special comes along, I prefer to remain single, that is PDAless. At this moment I am just happy dating my girlfriend, the Sony Ericsson W900i. Here she is:

'self-in·dul·gence' In Line Art

Here is my little experiment in line art for my forthcoming comic project. The style is influenced by old political posters. The subject is also a political subject about wars and occupation. I will not be 'acting' in it but my heart is very much into it.

Gathering of Adek2, Kakak & Abang

Finally I had the chance to meet 'kakz' as I knew her in rantauan.com. The rest of the rantauan members and I visited her at her family place in Bangi. It was a long drive halfway to Seremban but it seems closer than Ampang :) Incidentlly it was her birthday week and we all celebrated together, the cake and all. Her age? Definitely younger than me. I guess she can comfortably call me AbangJo from now :)

Newbie On Scanner

No, this is not a picture of an alien. It is a scan of my sister's first baby. Thought we lost him/her a month ago when my sister had a bleeding. But it was a follip growth that burst. No, not a floppy for data storage. This is a follip some kind of thing that is alien to men. Doctor heard the heart beat the other day and baby is still there. Hang on tight baby. I hope you will have a smooth landing, insha Allah.

My Coffee Event

Feeling frustrated after been working for 12 hours and 7 days a week. Especially when people are just mean, short-tongue and short-sighted, I just need a good cup of coffee. I don't usually drink coffee but when I drink it is like an event. Got myself a coffee with Tongkat Ali and Ginseng. Have it in my 12 year old mug hoping to recapture some moments from the old days of free and easy.

*short-tongue is my interpretation of people who just speak without thinking.

Thunder and Lightning in 'Paradise'

The trailer is now renamed 'Stealing Paradise'. Perhaps after being 'strangers' for sometime. After done hundreds of test I finally completed the lightning scene. The original lightning strokes were generated in After Effects but it was thin and too realistic. I ported it over to Macromedia's Flash and retraced it to give more of a cel feel. It is finally composited in Discreet's Combustion to get the over exposure effect at the opening of the cloud.

Sunday In Bali

After weeks of crunching numbers for my business plan, I finally gave myself a break. Why not go to Bali? May not be physically there but in culinary spirit. I missed seafood especially a delicious squid dish. I just love this Balinese recipe. Very island feel or shall we say taste. Be generous with the white pepper and make it more liquid rather than dry like the photo.

Ingredients:
600 gm baby squid
1 tablespoon fresh lime juice
1/3 teaspoon fresh white pepper powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoon oil
5 shallots, peeled and sliced
2 large red chillies
1/2 cup spice paste for seafood
1 cup chicken stock or chicken granule with water
5 sprigs lemon basil, sliced
fried shallots and sprigs of lemon basil to garnish

Operation Manual:
Remove skin of squid and pull out the tentacles and head. Cutt off and discard the head and beaky portion, but reserve the tentacles, if preffered. Clean the squid thorougly. Make sure you got rid off the black ink sack. Marinate squid with lime juice, pepper and salt.
Heat oil in wok, add shallots, chillies and squid and saute for 2 minutes over high heat. Add seafood spice paste and continue to saute for 1 more minute. Pour in chicken stock, add the sliced basil and bring to boil. Reduce heat and simmer for 1 minute. Season to taste and garnish with sprigs of lemon basil, fried shallots and serve with coconut rice.

Spice Paste for Seafood:
10 large red chillies, seeded and chopped
6 cloves of garlic, peeled and chopped
15 shallots, peeled and chopped
10 cm ginger, peeled and chopped
10 cm fresh tumeric, peeled and chopped
1 medium-sized tomato
1 tablespoon coriander seeds
10 candlenuts
1 teaspoon dried shrimp paste
4 tablespoons oil
3 tablespoons tamarind pulp
2 salam leaves
2 stalks lemon grass

Process all ingredients, except oil, tamarind pulp, salam leaves and lemon grass, until coarsely ground. Heat oil, add all ingredients and cook over moderate heat for about 5 minutes, stirring frequently until golden. Cool before using. Can be stored in fridge in an air tight plastic container.

The Baby Is Coming!

Received a real good news the other day. I am finally going to be a real uncle in October. This is happening too fast. The wedding in December was like yesterday. I still haven't finish editing my sister's wedding video. Have to finish it by this weekend. If not I have to include the birth too :). That's the intro title you are seeing. Watch out baby, we are going to rock 'n' roll :)

The Storm Is Coming To 'Paradise'

After weeks of testing in AfterBurn I finally decided to do the 'Stormy Clouds' in Vue 6 Xtreme using the new MetaClouds. It has less options compared to AfterBurn for 3DS Max but it has one important feature that I need most, individual cloud modeling. Each of the cloud's blob can be moved and scaled as I wish. Almost like sculpting it. The animation of the cloud texture is based on the Z value, that is Z=time. For this sequence I used Z=0.2 and that will give a steady rolling texture.

The other day my 'step daughter' Breianne wrote to me and send a couple of photos. On this one Danielle is on the right and Breianne is on the left with her son Wyatt, my little darling. The guy in the middle is still a mystery. They all live in Tennessee. Where you may ask. Well it's down south and north of Jawjuh, Hot-lanta :)

Living In An Incubator

Finally after months of waiting my company JAZ Multimedia got the 'green light' to move in the Incubator Centre at Plaza Sentral. I am glad that it is fully furnished and quite well done. I just bring in my new laptop and just plug it in for the free Internet access. Well not just a laptop, just bought a new electric thermos for my on going supply of hot tea. For the next two years it is going to be a lot of hard work, 24/7 most likely. Would someone send me a two year supply of Hershey's bars of toffee and nuts nougat :)

Here are a couple of other shots of the Incubator:

Old Friend With A New Soul

I was down south last weekend visiting my dad. Met an old friend, a Roland MP-600 electronic piano that I used to practice on during the 70's for my classical class. Not too fond of the electronic sound but it was the only piano that I could practice at night with the headphones on without waking up the neighbours. In 2005 I retrofitted it with a microcontroller, LCD display and a specially designed interface to connect to modern sound modules and computers via MIDI. Now it can pretend that it is a Steinway or Boesendorfer. Here is my original schematic: http://www.imagefuse.com/info.php?id_pic=11837.

Ships Of 'Paradise'

Finally done modelling all three ships for the feature trailer 'Strangers In Paradise'. Primary model done on Rhino and will be completed in Maya for the finer details and texturing. From left to right, the Pirate Boat, the Main Ship & the Ghost Ship. These are ships that sailed around the waters of South China Sea in the 1800s.

Spicy Sunday

Found a new recipe from the Pakistani collection. No fancy name. Just Ginger Chicken. I was quite curious about the initial preparation. The meat is boiled in water rather than fry with oil or ghee. Though oil and butter are added later. I suggest to go easy on the pepper for those who cannot tolerate hot & spicy. For my standard it is just below the devil's mark. It is tasty with a slight variation of my usual spicy food. Here are the ingredients and operation manual:

Ingredients:
chicken 1/2kg
green chillies 3-4
turmeric (haldi) powder 1/4 tsp
garam masala 1/2 tsp
coriander(dhania)leaves 1/2 tsp
chinese salt 1/2 tsp
oil 1/4 cup
butter 2 tbsp
tomatoes 3-4
ginger 1/4 cup (chop)
garlic/ginger paste 1 tbsp
black pepper 1 tsp
salt 1 tsp
ketchup 1 tbsp
yogurt 1/2 cup
red chillies 1 tsp

Method:
In a pan add chicken, ginger garlic paste, tomatoes cook until water dries. Then add chinese salt, salt, red chillies, black pepper, turmeric powder, butter, oil cook until oil separates. Then add (whipped) yogurt, green chillies, ketchup, tiny slices of ginger, garam masala, cook on medium heat for 3 mins. Then garnish with coriander leaves and serve with raita and naan.

A YouTube Weekend

Yesterday I just hang out with fiends at home. We were talking about music and try to interpret things like Procol Harum's 'A Whiter Of Pale'. It is still an enigma especially by today's generation. Then we visited http://www.youtube.com/. It is quite a surprise that there are also many retros there. I finally got hooked when I learned that I can download the clips and save it on my hard disk. Amin Shahab and His Longest Artwork

This evening I had a dinner meeting with my old friend Amin Shahab and the Ambassador of Yemen at Hotel Le Meridian in KL Sentral. Amin is doing the longest artwork about human civilisation. The artwork when finish would be 1 km long to be presented to the Malaysian government as a gift on the 50th Independence Day or the 'Merdeka Day' as it is known here. He was discussing with ambassador his next research trip that includes Yemen, Mecca and Pakistan. His Excellency gave some insights about Yemen. The food was interesting especially it was Middle Eastern all the way. I thought I saw a belly dancer :)

At Home In Petaling Jaya

So finally we are in 2007. Not feeling any older. Just an advanced youth. Got to start something new before I grow older. Why not a blog? Let all friends and family living somewhere in this universe know what I am up to lately. Well I am now living in Petaling Jaya, Section 14, just outside of Kuala Lumpur. Up on the 14th Floor of Millenium Place is where I stay. Just beside Asia Jaya train station. That's my room you are looking surrounded by all my toys. While at work or play looking over the city lights and the big wide sky.
